Record a crack before deciding on repair

Dates, location and changes help a professional evaluate a line without remote guesswork.

Planning guide · reviewed 12 October 2026

Make an observation record

Photograph the detail and a wider view showing nearby corners, openings and trim. Add dates and note when you first noticed the line. Record changes, prior repairs and other changes nearby. Photographs document observations; they cannot establish the cause of movement or determine structural significance. Keep the record factual rather than assigning a diagnosis yourself.

Avoid an easy explanation

Do not assume ordinary settlement because a home is newer, or assume serious damage from appearance alone. Ask an appropriate professional about widening, recurrence or accompanying concerns. If the cause lies outside the finish layer, another cosmetic repair may not resolve it. Keep observation and diagnosis separate so the repair decision follows findings rather than a familiar explanation.

Take the history to the estimator

Share prior work and dates instead of only requesting that the line disappear. Ask what the proposal addresses, what is uncertain and what prompts further assessment. A DuPont repair log helps compare proposals using the same history. Do not disturb older or suspect material to investigate behind the finish; have the responsible professional determine suitable assessment.

Keep these questions with your notes

  • Keep dated wide and close photos.
  • Record recurrence and nearby changes.
  • Ask for assessment before accepting a cause.

This is general planning information, not a diagnosis, site assessment or hazardous-material work instruction.
